Get “Pinspired” with Cantaloupe
Summer is almost over but that certainly doesn’t mean California cantaloupe season is. Our farmers are expecting the season to last through October which means there’s still plenty of time to get creative with cantaloupe.
The reason cantaloupe season lasts so long here in California (typically from April through November) is because of the state’s two distinct growing regions. In the Southern Desert, where temperatures are generally warm year-round, cantaloupes are planted around January and start harvesting in April. Then in June harvest shifts to the Westside region of the San Joaquin Valley and lasts through September. When harvest wraps up in the valley, late season cantaloupes back in the desert are ready for harvest. This back and forth planting and harvesting between the two regions is why we get to enjoy fresh California cantaloupe for a majority of the year.
With plenty of fresh cantaloupe available we suggest getting creative in the kitchen and trying out fun new ways to enjoy delicious and nutritious cantaloupe. Make something up on your own or, if you need inspiration, try an existing cantaloupe recipe.
